An introduction to the basics of wood science in a hard-hitting one day course from the field's leading professors. Held at the USDA Forest Products Laboratory in Madison.

Who Should Attend?
Professionals who work in the forest products industry but have not received a formal degree in wood science
What Will You Learn?
A practical understanding of the fundamentals of wood and the processes used to convert it into solid wood products. These include wood structure, adhesives and dimensional stability. They will also learn about wood-polymer relationships which are fundamental to engineered wood products. State of the art drying and lumber processing will be discuss along with preservation and protection techniques. The FPL tour will demonstrate leading edge research projects in action. CEU Credits will be offered and attendees will receive a flash drive and handouts of the presentations.

Dr. Dave DeVallance, Associate Professor, West Virginia University
In 1997, David DeVallance received his B.S. degree in wood products processing and manufacturing from Pennsylvania State University. After graduating, he worked for PFS Corporation in Madison, Wisconsin as a Staff Engineer working on the training of manufactured home inspectors and testing of engineered wood studs and joists. From 1998 to 2009, he worked for TECO as a Staff Scientist. In 2003, he received his M.S. degree in Wood Science from Oregon State University and received the 2005 FPS Wood Award for his master’s thesis. In 2009, he received his Ph.D. in Wood Science from Oregon State University. He is currently Assistant Professor of Wood Science and Technology in the Division of Forestry and Natural Resources at West Virginia University (WVU). In 2013, he was appointed as the Program Coordinator for the Wood Science and Technology program at WVU. He serves as the Site Director for the NEWBio Bioenergy and Bioproducts Education Program (BBEP) at WVU and is a Faculty Fellow in the Environmental Research Center (ERC) at WVU.
Dr. Chris Hunt, Research Chemist, USDA Forest Products Laboratory.
Dr. Chris Hunt is a research chemist, working since 1993 at the Forest Products Laboratory, the federal lab tasked with increasing the value of our timber resource. His current research focuses on how water and chemicals inside cell walls impact the properties and performance of wood products, with applications in decay resistance and adhesive durability. He is also actively working to improve the performance of protein based wood adhesives. He received his BS in Physics and Mathematics Secondary Education and PhD in Analytical Chemistry from University of Wisconsin – Madison.
Dr. Joseph E. Jakes, Research Materials Engineer, USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory
Since 2010 Joseph Jakes has been a Research Materials Engineer in the Forest Biopolymer Science and Engineering group at the USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, WI. He received a BS in Chemical and Biological Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2005. Also in 2005 he was accepted into a USDA Forest Service student trainee position and began conducting nanoindentation research at the Forest Products Laboratory that led to the completion of his PhD in Materials Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2010. His current research interests include developing advanced material characterization techniques to probe structures and properties at micrometer length scales and below, and applying the techniques to develop structure-property relationships in wood cell walls. Joseph has authored over 40 refereed papers and his work has been recognized through numerous invited talks, an invitation to spend two years as a visiting scientist at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory (2013-2015), and numerous awards including the 2008 Forest Products Society Wood Award, 2012 Presidential Award for Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), and 2017 Forest Products Society Wood Engineering Achievement Award: Young Engineer. He has been an active member of FPS since 2007 attending and presenting at annual meetings, co-organizing symposiums, and serving as the student chair for the 2018 FPS International Conference.
Dr. Brian Bond, Professor and Extension Specialist, Department of Sustainable Biomaterials, Virginia Tech
Brian H. Bond, Ph.D., serves as a professor and extension specialist in the area of wood products manufacturing. His focus is on improving the sustainable use and manufacturing of wood products. He has twenty years experience in wood drying, sawmill performance, and the performance of wood products (flooring, furniture, etc.). Brian has a teaching, extension and research appointment, and has taught over 300 continuing education courses to those manufacturing and using wood products. He also has an interest in training preparing students to take on leadership roles in the area of natural resources and is director of the College of Natural Resources Leadership Institute.
Dr. Beth Stokes, Assistant Professor, Mississippi State University
Beth Stokes received her BS from Mississippi University for Women, and her Ph.D. in Forest Resources from Mississippi State University. Her research interests include application of bioremediation technologies, identification of pathogenic and beneficial microorganisms in native environments, microbial degradation of chlorinated phenols and development of novel wood protectants from natural sources.
Dr. Rich Vlosky, Louisiana Forest Products Development Center, Louisiana State University
Richard Vlosky is Director of the Louisiana Forest Products Development Center and Crosby Land and Resources Endowed Professor in Forest Sector Business Development at the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center in Baton Rouge. He received his Ph.D. in Wood Products Marketing at Penn State University, an M.S. in International Forest Products Trade from the University of Washington and a B.S. in Natural Resources and Forest Management from Colorado State University. He has authored or co-authored 157 refereed publications, 22 book chapters and 4 books, and has made 525 presentations on a variety of topics in the U.S. and in 31 countries. Dr. Vlosky is Immediate Past-President of the Forest Products Society, Board Member of CORRIM (Consortium for Research on Renewable Industrial Materials, Member-Emerging & Critical Issues Committee for the Society of Wood Science & Technology (SWST), and Louisiana Representative for the Southern Bioenergy Working Group.
Internationally, he is President of WoodEMA, the Association of Wood Processing and Furniture Manufacturing based in Zagreb, Croatia, Adjunct Professor at the University of Timisoara in Romania, and Fellow in the Institute of Wood Science in the United Kingdom. He is the United States delegate for the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) Research Group on Forest Products Marketing and Business Development. He is also on the Advisory Board for the Center for Sustainability in the University of Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka. For 10 years up until 2014, he was the Leader of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe’s Team of Specialists on Sustainable Forest Products. He remains a U.S. delegate as well as being an Outside Expert on the Wood Energy Team.
